Oleg Timofeyev (University of Iowa) will present his new documentary (co-directed with Sabine Gölz) on the influential theologian and church musician Richard Gölz (1887-1975). Dr. Timofeyev studied Early Music Performance at USC (M.A., 1993) and at Duke (Ph. D., 1999). He has been fascinated with the life and works of Richard Gölz who happened to be his wife’s paternal grandfather. Oleg grew up in a Jewish family of Holocaust survivors, and Gölz’s heroic actions during the Third Reich naturally appealed to him. Moreover, Oleg saw in Richard Gölz one of the pioneers of the Early Music movement. This is why back in 2012, Sabine Gölz and Oleg Timofeyev decided to make their next documentary on her grandfather. Their work began in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Richard lived his last 17 years as an Eastern Orthodox Priest at the St. Savva Serbian Orthodox Cathedral. Then the filmmakers received a generous grant from the University of Iowa, and spent the year 2012–13 in Southern Germany, collecting interviews from many people some of whom knew Richard Gölz personally.
In his pre–screening lecture, Dr. Timofeyev will discuss the life achievements of Richard Gölz, and the reasons why even in Germany he is not as well known as he should be. After the film, during the Q&A section, Oleg will outline the challenges in making this film, how he wrote the music score, who were the performers of the songs in the film, and any other aspects that may come up in the discussion. The film is in English and German, with English subtitles.
