Thursday, April 4, 2:30 pm: Lecture on Brazilian film The Second Mother by Dr. Miriam Jorge, University of Missouri-St. Louis  

Dr. Miriam Jorge will present a paper titled “Unspoken Privileges: race, class, and gender in The Second Mother” in the Student Union Theater on Thursday, April 4th, 2:30 pm-3:45 pm.

Dr. Miriam Jorge is an Associate Professor and Dr. Allen B. and Helen S. Shopmaker Endowed Professor of the College of Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. Before starting her position in St. Louis, she worked at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, in Belo Horizonte – Brazil for 20 years where she was also the Associate Dean for International Affairs. Dr. Jorge has several publications on Applied Linguistics, Education in public schools, Critical Literacy, EFL textbooks, social justice, and African Diaspora. She has also researched on Brazilian History and Culture through film, investigating how Brazilian racial identities are produced, maintained and transformed in miscegenated Brazil.
